Reader, Think for a second before you respond to the question. It’s not because you don’t have time. Anyone can find 15 to 20 minutes each day for the things that matter to them. This week, in Brain Food Wednesdays, issue 247, let’s explore why so many of those books remain untouched and how you can start reading smarter, not harder. The reason you have so many unread books on your bookshelf is that no one ever taught you how to read nonfiction books when you became an adult. As a child, you were taught to read every word on the page. You read left to right. Reading every word on a page is for fiction because you don’t want to miss the plot. But for nonfiction, few books deserve that time investment. Educator Russell Stauffer found that on the average page of a nonfiction book, only four to 11 percent of the information carries meaning. That’s about one sentence. The 80/20 Rule applies to reading. You can read 20 percent of a nonfiction book and understand 80 percent of the text. But which 20 percent do you read? What price are you paying for all those unread books? Some of those unread books may be irrelevant because your needs have changed. However, many of them may have information to help you in your business and career. Not getting the information you need from the books could hold you back. To move forward, it’s important to learn how to read strategically. This way, you’re reading to learn what you need to know. You’re focusing on what matters to you. So how do you read strategically? I can help you! Register for my workshop, Applied Knowledge is Power: Reading Strategically to Get Knowledge Faster. I’ll show you how to prioritize your unread books and you’ll learn how to find what you need from those books.Let’s focus on what matters to you.
